Preschooler Creative Walk in Nature

August 26 @ 9:45 am 11:00 am

🐦 Calling all curious little ones! We’re heading to Soudley Ponds for a preschool-friendly Creative Nature Walk – complete with scavenger hunts, drawing, exploring and more.

We’re thrilled to introduce a brand-new Creative Walk in Nature for Preschoolers at Lower Soudley Pond, specially designed to be fully accessible for both pushchairs and wheelchairs.

Taking place in the beautiful Forest of Dean, this gentle 1-mile route follows the Lower Soudley Ponds, a peaceful series of man-made ponds designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI). With shaded paths, varied wildlife and wetland habitats full of birds, insects and plants, it’s the perfect setting for young minds to explore and connect with nature.

Aimed at children aged 2–5 (but suitable for all), this 1.5-hour creative walk includes multiple fun stops where little ones can take part in nature-based activities. From scavenger hunts to simple sketching or collecting textures, the experience is all about curiosity, creativity, and gentle discovery. Krysa will be your walk leader from Canopy Creative Network and will be guiding you through the prompts and activities. She moved to the Forest of Dean 4 years ago and has since become a mother of two under three. She’s an early years practitioner who is passionate about outdoor education and the environment.

We’ll be using the Soudley Active Travel Creative Map, available to download or print in advance. It features points of interest like trees, ducks, dragonflies, and artwork created by local children.

📍 Location: RSPB Lower Soudley Pond, Forest of Dean. Meet at The Dean Heritage Centre Soudley GL14 2UB 🎟️ Tickets: £2.50 per person (please book one ticket for every child and adult attending) ♿ Access: Route is flat and accessible for pushchairs and wheelchairs 🕙 Duration: 1.5 hours

Please note: this is not a drop-off session — children must be accompanied and supervised by an adult at all times.

Free Parking at the Dean Heritage Centre and Cafe open for refreshments after the walk. Family facilities on site.

This is a lovely, low-cost opportunity to explore nature as a family, meet others, and make creative memories outdoors. We’d love to see you there! 🌿

About the Creative Walks programme: Canopy Creative Walks nurture connection, creative thinking and mental wellbeing through a combination of time outdoors, gentle exercise and social interaction. They are open to everyone. The routes are relatively short, the emphasis being on the journey taken rather than the destination. They follow a process of looking, listening, responding individually and collectively and sharing time together. Each walk is carefully researched, uniquely designed and guided by the leader/artist. Participants are encouraged to stop to observe, record, photograph, listen or consider a particular feature. Numerous approaches are offered to enable individuals to make a personal response visually or in words. The aim is to demonstrate various creative starting points which can be developed by participants later. At the end of the walk we share work, ideas and a coffee/sandwich at a nearby café for anyone interested in joining. Find out more about Canopy: https://canopynetwork.co.uk/
